I wrote the piano pieces in Episodes during a period of seclusion, after a profound experience in which I successfully performed resuscitation. This event shook my convictions about life and death. It was a time of silence and introspection.
The pieces in Episodes were composed with the idea that the notion of humans being “special” is invalid. We are like animals, showing similar behaviors in many respects. This simple observation carried deep meaning for me, which I could not elaborate on through cognitive means such as words or images. Fortunately, I was able to express this idea through music.
Another aspect of these pieces is that, after previously working with chance and electronic music, I focused entirely on composing by ear for acoustic instruments, deliberately avoiding digital instruments and music theory.
